I have two computers - Vista and XP - connecting each other in LAN and to internet through Linksys router.

I installed NeoRouter server in XP and NeoRouter explorer portable in Vista. I have set up port forwarding for both TCP and UDP to the XP.

If I keep the port as default 32976
1. I can login using log on 127.0.0.1 from XP
2. I can login using log on LAN ip (192.0.1.168.xxx) from both Vista and XP
3. I can NOT login through domain or public ip (DHCP from my ISP)

SOS Question: how can I connect through domain or public IP?

If I changed server port to another number, e.g. 12000
1. I can NOT log on 127.0.0.1 from XP
2. I can log on 127.0.0.1:12000 from XP
3. I can log on LANIP:12000 from both Vista and XP but not LANIP
4. I can NOT login through domain or public ip (DHCP from my ISP)

Question: Does "Log on" only recognize default port and for any non-default port, one needs to use IP:Port?

I checked the "configuration explorer", it says the domain is "127.0.0.1:12000". And when I tried to change the domain name in "Setting", I always get the error says "the domain name has been registered". No matter what random string I put in. It is very weired.

BTW, I can use my browser to connect to my web server using my public ip. So my router supports "media hairpin feature".

I can do "telnet mypublicip 80" without any problem. But "telnet mypublicip 32976" failed. TCPView shows CliService.exe TCP localip:4884 publicip:32976 SYS_SENT

All my firewall software were shut off. So no one actually blocks any service in the XP server machine. At this moment, I reached the dead end.

The SOS question is critical. The 2nd question is just for convenience.

TIA.

Hi ggbal,

Thanks for your input.

To use NeoRouter domain name or public IP, the only thing you need to do is setup port forwarding on your router, e.g. maps incoming packets to the server listening port. Since NeoRouter server uses TCP, you don't need to open the UDP port.

In your case, it's clear that you have not set port forwarding properly, so you cannot log on to the public IP.

The "Log on to" field can be filled with information in the formats below:
1. IP address (it will use default port 32976)
2. [IP]:[port]
3. NeoRouter domain name (it can solve the public IP and port automatically)

BTW, NeoRouter v9.4.906 has a bug related to renaming domain name and we will fix it in the next build. Because of this, you cannot rename it yet.

Let us know if you have any concern.

Thanks,
KevinZ - NeoRouter team

Thanks. I did find one problem in my port forwarding. And now everything works. It is a terrific application.

I have another question. I use portable client in my Vista machine. After I log in, I can only see and add my XP computer (which is the server). I can't add the vista machine. From the configuration explorer in xp, I can see both computer, although the vista one is marked as temporary. I can not add vista computer either from xp login.

Is this the correct behavior?

Never mind, I found another thread which has good explanation about the difference between viewer and explorer. So my question was answered there.
