I'm wondering if the server's internet speed has everything to do with how fast the upload/download speed is between peers? Or does the server simply bridge the connection between the two peers, and they directly transfer with each other without being bottlenecked by the server's internet speed?

So if server is 500KB up/down

and peer 1 and peer 2 both have 1MB up/down

Will peer 1 and peer 2 be limited to 500KB?

Does anyone know how hamachi does this too?

It depends. If Peer1 and Peer2 can establish P2P connections, the speed will be 1MB up/down; if they use NR server to relay, the speed will be limited to 500KB.

NR Server/client does not implement traffic control logic, so they will use as much network bandwidth as possible; the limitation would be from OS/your router/ISP. On a Linux box, you can easily configure tc rules to control the traffic on need.
