Post subject:  First 14 minutes - CPU and Network Utilization at 100%

Am testing NeoRouter Free (Windows) on a small network. Love the product so far but am having an issue with 2 Notebooks. For the first 14 minutes immediatly after login (up to 15 min sometimes) the two 64bit units peg the CPU and Network Utilization (NeoRouter Connection) at 100%. During this time the systems are nearly useless and the shared resources are not able to be accessed from these two units. Have not seen this happen on any of the 32bit machines. (Not sure that it's a "64 bit issue" but that's the only commonality that I've been able to come up with so far for the two machines having this issue.)

The basic setup:
----------
Physical Location 1:

Win XP Pro 32bit Tower PC - NR Server here (client not running)
Win XP Pro 32bit Tower PC - NR Client
Win 7 Home Premium 32bit Notebook - NR Client (always local)
Win 7 Home Premium 64bit Notebook - NR Client (always local)

Physical Location 2 (about 4 miles away)

Win XP Pro 32bit Tower PC - NR Client
Win 7 Home Premium 64bit Notebook - NR Client (in and out of office)

Both locations have Suddenlink cable Internet service, 10meg/1meg.

---------

All but one of these units (NR Server) are clean/fresh OS installations fully updated.

Simply testing by sharing 1 folder out from the NR Server workstation and sharing 2 printers ... one at each location.

Everything seems to work great except for the two 64bit machines. They seem to work fine too after the 14 minute period (post login) has passed. Have taken the one (in and out of office) unit to various other locations (including local to the NR server) to see if it was somehow related to the Internet connection but there was no change.

During the time the CPU and Network Utilizaton are at 100% on the two workstations, the NR server is behaving perfectly (nearly no CPU or Network utilization) and all other workstations are able to work and access the shared resources normally.

Just need some suggestions to resolve for these two machines.

Let me know what other information you may need.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Gary,

Thanks for reporting the issue. The high CPU usage is likely the result of the high Network usage. Can you think of any reason that these two computers send large amount of data over the virtual network?

Can you try disconnecting all clients, then connect only one of the 64bit Win7 machine to the NeoRouter server? This test will tell us whether the client is having issue by itself or because it interacts with another client.

Another test is to run Wireshark and monitor the traffic on NeoRouter Virtual Network Connection, and see what kind of data is sent over it.

Thanks,
Luke

Thanks for you response Luke.

I can't really think of anything that these two particular units would be doing that would generate that kind of traffic over the VPN. I do know they do an AntiVirus update check with each boot but that's on the regular adapter and it only takes about a minute if there are updates (Avast.)

As a test though, I will remove AntiVirus software and see if that changes anything. Certainly worth a shot.

The only resources either of these units are accessing over VPN is one shared folder from the NR server machine (XP Pro 32) and one printer each that would be on a workstation at the other location. These are the same exact brand/model printers (ahhhh ... another commonality.) They are basic PCL drivers ... nothing fancy like scanning, faxing, etc.... print only.

As another test, I will break the printer connection and remove the drivers completely and see if there is any change.

As for your first suggestion (disconnecting all clients) ... is simply powering those machines down sufficient or would you prefer I delete their accounts from the server as well?

Will run Wireshark too and report findings back here.

Unfortunately, testing may take me a day or two as I will have to make sure I don't interrupt users at either location. I will do this and report back as quickly as I'm able to get exclusive access for testing.

Thanks again Luke.

hi Gary,

Thanks for running the tests. Please let me know the results.
For the first test, my goal was to isolate one of the computers with issues, and see if it still occurs. So yes, power off the computers will do.

If it is difficult to turn off all clients (since you have two locations), you can try a different test that replaces the first test. On one of the computers with issues, try setting up NeoRouter server, then Log on to "localhost" using Network Explorer. This test isolates the computer to its own NeoRouter domain and achieves the same goal.

If you are familiar with wireshark or windump, it is the most direct way to find out the type of traffic sent in the virtual network. But it does require a little technical skills.

There are many ways to isolate and pinpoint the issue, start from the easier methods for your situation.

Thanks,
Luke
