Post subject:  nrservice failing on Mac

I have several Macs running Snow Leopard with the latest patches.

nrservice crashes with the following in the log:
Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS)
Exception Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE at 0x0000000000000000
Crashed Thread: 2

This seems similar to other posts on this forum, but I'm not certain.

My experience is that NR will work for a while, but nrservice is very touchy and will crash on all of my 3 systems sooner or later (within a few hours, usually). A reboot does not fix the problem. To the contrary, a reboot usually causes NR to fail permanently. In fact, the only remedy I've found (which is probably because of my inexperience with the application more than anything else) is to remove NR entirely and reinstall it again from the distribution package.

I have NR running just fine on several Windows PCs. No complaints at all on those systems.

What is the proper command line statement to restart nrservice on a Mac, or is it supposed to spawn automatically? tuntap for OS X has also been updated to the latest version, by the way, so that shouldn't be the issue. Does the crash log have any other useful information?

Is this a known issue or just an anomaly on my Macs?

Thanks.

Hi George,

Thank you for the report.

Could you help get the log file? To enable logging, you can create /usr/local/ZebraNetworkSystems/NeoRouter/Log.ini with the following content:
Code:
    [Default]
    Mask=4294967295
    Type=1
    Path=/usr/local/ZebraNetworkSystems/

To restart nrservice, you can use the following command:
Code:
    sudo /Library/StartupItems/nrservice/nrservice restart

Once you reproduce the crash, please find the nrservice*.log under /usr/local/ZebraNetworkSystems/ and send the file to support@neorouter.com.

Logging can slow down NR performance, so remember to delete Log.ini once you are done.

All temporary files created by nrservice is saved to /usr/local/ZebraNetworkSystems/NeoRouter. Clear the folder should have the same result as removing and reinstalling. To completely remove nrclient from your system, you can use "sudo /Library/NeoRouter/rmnrclient.sh {userdata|taptun}".

We had fixed a few bugs since our last release. If this is a new bug, we definitely want to nail it soon. Hopefully our next release will work more reliably for you.

Thanks,

Ah. This information is golden. I'd seen the specs for the log.ini file, and I'd used the remove script, but didn't know about the switches, nor about the restart option for nrservice.

I'll see what comes up and get back later today.

Thanks so much!

The issue has been solved. Just describe the scenario here in case other users come cross the similar issue.

From the log file, we found the MAC machine does not response any IP packets from peer, but broadcast packets ONLY.

From your email, we know that you found the reason. "I believe the problem we were having was that, because of some fiddling we were doing a couple of weeks ago with our wireless connection to our Apple TV box, I had inadvertently left both her wired and wireless network connections active. I shut down the wireless network on her iMac and NeoRouter seems to be running properly now."

We keep investigating and found the bug causing it crashed in the senario.

The bug has been fixed will be included in the next release.

Thanks,
KevinZ - NeoRouter team

Thank you so much!

I've run the service for several days now, and everything seems to be working just fine. Since removing the errant wireless connection, my wife's system has been stable and solid.

Thanks for your super fast response in resolving this issue!
