Post subject:  NR Free Server for Tomato - update and WRT54GL compatibility

Hi,

I recently discovered NeoRouter and am interested in possibly running the server on one or more WRT54GL routers (probably v1.1) that currently have Tomato 1.28 installed. I'm curious if updates to:

NeoRouter Free Server for Tomato Firmware v1.25

… are planned, with v1.28 and eventually newer versions as the baseline.

Also, I've seen forum topics indicating that NR might have trouble on the WRT54GL due to its limited 4MB flash memory. Seems more an issue with OpenWRT than Tomato, though.

I'm trying to determine if:

- downgrading from Tomato v1.28 to v1.25 might/will matter
- using WRT54GL hardware might/will be too risky

Would installing NR on a different router (e.g. ASUS) with OpenWRT firmware be a preferable and recommended combination?

Any feedback is appreciated; thanks!

Hi sjk,

The ideal box would be ASUS-500gp, on which you can install both server and client. AUSU-520gu is still good enough for both OpenWrt or Tomato versions. So as to WRT54GL, it depends on the specific box. Generally, WRT54GL uses a little bit more space than ASUS box for its hardware settings, but still be able to install NR. But some users may use more space for settings and reported they cannot run NR server, so I'm not so sure. You may want to give a try. OpenWrt version should work on it.

Currently we don't have plan to upgrade to the Tomato 1.28 yet, but we may upgrade in the future when it gets stable.

Thanks,
KevinZ - NeoRouter team

Thanks for the response, Kevin.

Eliminating PC host dependency is an obvious reason to install the server on it; what's an example of why I might also want to install the client?

Wish I already knew how its wireless range compared with the WRT54GL. And how well the latter would work with it (if at all) as a WDS+WPA2 access point. Actual testing is the only way to tell, regardless of any claims.

That may be more feasible with the currently limited budget, but with the disadvantage of being less convenient to back out of than simply reinstalling the original hardware if the newer has problems.

Might give that a try if I ever have non-production hardware available and enough time for its learning curve.

Hmm, I wasn't aware of v1.28 instabilities compared to v1.25.

Now I'm thinking it makes better sense to start by running NeoRouter Server on a regular host and gain some experience before more seriously considering running it on a router.
