Thanks for the response, Kevin.

The ideal box would be ASUS-500gp, on which you can install both server and client.
Eliminating PC host dependency is an obvious reason to install the server on it; what's an example of why I might also want to install the client?
Wish I already knew how its wireless range compared with the WRT54GL. And how well the latter would work with it (if at all) as a WDS+WPA2 access point. Actual testing is the only way to tell, regardless of any claims.

So as to WRT54GL, it depends on the specific box. […] You may want to give a try.
That may be more feasible with the currently limited budget, but with the disadvantage of being less convenient to back out of than simply reinstalling the original hardware if the newer has problems.

OpenWrt version should work on it.
Might give that a try if I ever have non-production hardware available and enough time for its learning curve.

Currently we don't have plan to upgrade to the Tomato 1.28 yet, but we may upgrade in the future when it gets stable.
Hmm, I wasn't aware of v1.28 instabilities compared to v1.25.
Now I'm thinking it makes better sense to start by running NeoRouter Server on a regular host and gain some experience before more seriously considering running it on a router.
