Hi,

I'm seeing a strange issue.

I am using Neorouter free between a Windows machine and a Linux Server which hosts my small Asterisk VOIP system. Latency is important as it destroys voice quality.

Things have worked well for some time.

Today, I get poor pings between the machines over Neorouter (10.0.0.x). Some are good -- 20 ms and then some are bad 200+ ms.

I figured that I just have poor connectivity, but then I am able to directly ping the public IPs and consistently get good latency -- no 200+ ms responses.

I have tried MTR & WinMTR and see the same behavior: Fast on the public IPs on all hops. On the NR network, I see a worst ping of over 200 ms.

Why would this be?

Hi markd89,

The connection performance is impacted by several factors.

1. if your NR clients could establish UDP P2P connections, you will get the fastest speed. Usually NR clients can establish UDP P2P in most network environments, unless both peers are behind symmetric NAT or restricted firewall rules. In this case, it will fall back to TCP P2P or relayed by NR server automatically.

2. Relayed by NR server provides the speed slower than other modes, and the performance is related to the NR server CPU speed and network throughput. If you want to get better performance, please improve those two factors.

3. Beside that, you can always optimize your NR and OS systems. See the performance tunning guide on our website. With NR Pro, you can filter out unnecessary packets to improve the performance.

Thanks,
KevinZ - NeoRouter team

The connection I am troubleshooting is between my machine (Windows) and the NR Server itself (CentOS Linux).

What is strange is that the ping responses via NR are sometimes OK and sometimes very slow (200+ ms) but the pings between the same two machines using the public IPs are consistently good with no slow outliers.

I will take another look at the Performance Tuning Guide you mentioned.

If you come up with any more ideas to explain this inconsistency, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,
Mark

I have more information on the issue. Maybe the is a clue?

With no traffic, I can ping the NR server via the VPN IP (10.0.0.2) and get pings ~30ms.

If I use a little bandwidth, (1 VOIP call) from my machine to the NR Server, pings slow to ~100ms.

If I use a little more bandwidth, then my pings slow to 200-300ms.

Again, if I ping the public IP of the NR Server, I still get 30 ms pings.

I checked CPU usage on my machine and on the NR Server and CPU usage is low.

Do you have more suggestions for me?

Thanks!
Mark
